Explosives From The 1950s Discovered in Forest Acres Shed
The Forest Acres Police Department (FAPD) reported the discovery of two explosives inside a shed on Sunday afternoon. Officers responded to the Idalia Drive neighborhood at around 4:30 p.m. where they found a rocket-propelled grenade and a mortar round stored in the shed on the property. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) Bomb Squad was called in to assist FAPD in safely removing the explosives. The expert teams determined that the grenade was inactive, but there was a possibility that the mortar round could still be live.
The removal of the devices was successfully carried out without any injuries or damage to property. Police confirmed that the explosives would be disposed of.
Chief Don Robinson of FAPD emphasized the importance of caution when encountering such devices, noting that similar discoveries have been made in the vicinity of Fort Jackson over the years. Should you ever come across some ‘spring cleaning’ that could potentially be EXPLOSIVE – promptly alert law enforcement upon finding any suspicious items and to refrain from attempting to handle them independently due to the potential danger.
An investigation is ongoing to determine how the explosives ended up on the property, although no charges have been filed at this time.
