Celebrate MLK Day in SC: Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Join Columbia, SC in commemorating the life and legacy of Civil Rights Leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through a blend of art, music, service, and activism. Here are several ways you can participate in honoring Dr. King’s impact on society right here in the Midlands…

1. King Day at the Dome

Hosted by the state’s NAACP chapter, the 24th annual “King Day at the Dome” kicks off at 8:30 a.m. with a prayer at Zion Baptist Church. Following the prayer, a march to the South Carolina State House will take place, culminating in a rally on the grounds. Originating in 2000 as a protest against the Confederate flag flying on the State House dome, this historic event now features Vice President Kamala Harris as this year’s keynote speaker. 2. UofSC MLK Celebration

The University of South Carolina is hosting a MLK Commemorative Breakfast on Friday, January 12, 2024. The breakfast will include live music, a keynote address, and a presentation honoring the university’s MLK Social Justice Award recipients. Additionally, on Saturday, January 13th, students and the Carolina community will engage in the annual MLK Day of Service, commencing with a guest speaker and followed by opportunities to serve the local area.

3. FAAAC MLK Celebration

Embrace the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the Columbia Museum of Art, open on Monday, January 16, 2024, with free admission. The Friends of African American Art & Culture (FAAAC) will host a storytelling event celebrating Dr. King’s life, coupled with line dancing. 4. Visit Stone of Hope in MLK Jr. Park

Add the Martin Luther King Jr. Park to your outdoor adventures this week. Nestled in the historic Lower Waverly area near Five Points, the park features the Stone of Hope, a concrete and stone fountain at the entrance adorned with plaques featuring quotes from Dr. King. The park, embodying natural elements such as water, stone, and trees, symbolizes justice, democracy, and hope. Don’t miss the 36th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Ceremony at 4 p.m.
